On 13 December 2024, leading Afghan women activists from around the world, Special Envoys for Afghanistan, Feminist Foreign Policy and Gender Equality Ambassadors, UN Representatives and Spanish civil society organisations came together in Madrid for a one-day conference organized by government of Spain in collaboration with Women for Afghanistan (WFA), and co-sponsored by the Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF). The Madrid Conference titled “Hear Us: Catalysing a political space and accountability for Afghan women” was rooted in the Tirana Declaration, adopted at the All-Afghan Women Summit (The Summit) held in Albania on 13-15 September, 2024.

The Madrid Conference aimed to embed the Tirana Summit recommendations, continue to build relationships and build a roadmap toward joint action. But this is only the start. Closing the Madrid Conference, Ana María Alonso Giganto, Ambassador at Large, Feminist Foreign Policy of the Kingdom of Spain said: “We will continue to stand with Afghan women and as representatives of supportive countries, we will ensure that this Afghan women-led Summit process continues with another event soon”. A Call to Action was released at the close of the Madrid Conference.
CALL TO ACTION
On December 13, Afghan women gathered in Madrid, Spain, for the Catalyzing Political Space and Accountability for Afghan Women conference. The event brought together envoys, members of the international community, NGOs, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. A finalized Call to Action document was issued in three languages during the conference.
