Launch of Guiding Framework 2026.
On 4 September 2026, Women for Afghanistan (WFA), the City of Geneva, and the Permanent Missions of Ireland and Canada to the UN in Geneva launched the Guiding Framework for Afghanistan Accountability at Women’s Voices for Peace and Justice: Advancing Accountability for Afghanistan.
Developed through consultations with more than 70 organizations and in coordination with the UN Special Rapporteur’s Office, the Framework offers practical guidance on strengthening accountability and including Afghan civil society. It addresses the IIMA, proceedings before the ICC and ICJ, efforts to codify gender apartheid as a crime, and the Special Rapporteur’s mandate.

Panel discussion
The launch featured contributions from Ana María Alonso Giganto, Deike Potzel, Richard Bennett, Tatiana Kotlyarenko, Laurence Simms, and Fawzia Koofi. Christina Lamb moderated the panel, “Can Afghanistan Have Peace and Stability Without Accountability and Justice?”, with Tamana Paryani, Alexandra Crawford, Parasto Hakim, Anwarullah Qazi, and an anonymous young woman from Herat.
The discussion examined how accountability can support women’s rights and the role of society in advancing it. Participants also heard virtual testimonies from inside Afghanistan and watched an excerpt from The Sharp Edge of Peace.
