Advancing accountability mechanisms to protect human rights
Through its advocacy efforts, WFA will create connections for CSOs, activists and experts to engage directly with international stakeholders, including the United Nations Human Rights Council, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and numerous member state missions. These engagements will enable Afghan women and civil society representatives to share firsthand testimonies, brief diplomats with human rights mandate including Feminist Foreign Policy Ambassadors, and ensure that these officials respond effectively to the dire human rights situation in Afghanistan. WFA will advocate for concrete policy measures within the framework of an “all-tools approach” to accountability and the guiding framework of WFA.

- Objective 1Advocate against violations, coordinate with bodies and organizations that document human rights abuses, and amplify the voices of people of Afghanistan, especially women, at the Human Rights Council, ICC, ICJ, and beyond1
- Objective 2To advance international accountability for violations of Afghan women’s rights by convening key actors around the use of international mechanisms—including the ICC, ICJ, and Human Rights Council—through high-level conferences and side events during HRC sessions in Geneva.2
- Objective 3Engage with UN, EU, OIC, regional countries, ICC and ICJ, and other global actors to shape policies that uphold human rights with a focus on women’s rights and ensure the return of the constitutional order to Afghanistan.3
- Objective 4To build a sustainable advocacy committee and develop a guiding framework for Afghan women’s rights and human rights organizations that will drive longterm, women-led engagement with international accountability frameworks4
- Activity 1Convene the annual HEARUS Summit, alongside high-level conferences and advocacy events, with focus victims and their lived experiences at the center of discussions. These platforms will amplify firsthand testimonies to inform and influence international policy processes, legal mechanisms, and multilateral conventions.
- Activity 2Design a guiding framework outlining mechanisms for a cohesive and strategic “all-tools approach” to accountability. Work with WFA advocacy committee composed of Afghan civil society representatives and diverse stakeholders, ensuring inclusivity and coordinated action.
- Activity 3Provide specialized online trainings and capacity-building sessions for committee members, strengthening their advocacy skills, policy engagement strategies, and understanding of international accountability mechanisms.
